Vietnam's top technology university requires near-perfect scores amid rising admissions competition

The school's current top five departments are Computer Sciences, Computer Engineering, Control Engineering and Automation, Electronic-Telecommunications Engineering, and Microelectronics and Nanotechnology Engineering, said Vu Huy Hai, head of the admissions department at the university.

Speaking on Sunday, Hai added that the institution expected competition for entrance into these highly sought after departments would be "ruthless" as the number of candidates applying is currently 3-5 times higher than last year.

"The number of candidates is high, and they all have high scores, so the scores required for entry are expected to be near perfect, maybe 95/100 for those with personal applications and interviews, and 1590/1600 for those using SAT scores," he said.

Last year, candidates needed an SAT score of at least 1250/1600 for entry, while those using national skill assessment exams needed a score of at least 70/100.

This year, the university will admit 9,260 students. Each of the aforementioned faculties will accept 140-500 new applicants.

Candidates get to choose two faculties of their choices to file their applications. After their scores in the interview round have been announced, students can re-evaluate their chances of getting into their desired faculties, especially some with tougher competition, and re-pick their choices to increase their chance of admission.

The Hanoi University of Science and Technology is Vietnam's foremost technology school along with HCMC University of Technology, and is one of the schools with the toughest competition for entrants in the country.
